The aim of the collaboration is to carry out a bottom-up quantitative analysis to estimate the potential availability of biomass feedstock for the production of sustainable biofuels in Spain. This analysis is conducted in a disaggregated manner for the main feedstocks included in European and national regulations.
To achieve this objective, the following steps are taken:
i. Selection of feedstocks within the study’s scope: Starting from existing feedstock lists, a selection is made of those to be considered in the study, prioritizing those initially assessed as having the greatest potential in Spain, as well as their sustainability attributes. The feedstocks are classified according to the categories defined in the regulations (e.g., RED III, Order TED 728/2024).
ii. Estimation of potential availability: For each selected feedstock, the amount potentially available in Spain is estimated. The calculation method used is specific to each type of feedstock.
iii. Adjustment of gross potential: The gross potential obtained in the previous step is corrected based on techno-economic and sustainability criteria to determine an adjusted potential.
iv. Comparison with existing studies: Finally, the results of this bottom-up study are compared with the results of previous studies conducted for Spain (top-down).
